COLLEGE RADIO RECAP WEEK 39 CMJ ISSUE 1412

What a week! I really thought early on we were going to plow past last weeks 247 stations, in the end we did have more stations but only 13. Creeping on up though so thats good to see.

Beach House is a beast. We are all competing for #2 at this point. Last week Beach House had just over 70% of the stations this week they were up to 72% of all stations. At one point early on there were only 4 stations, out of around 30, that did not have Beach House on their charts. So you guys like Beach House.

The volume of ADDS right now is pretty crazy and with the CMJ marathon taking a week of reporting away from us next week should be even crazier. This week there were 14 records that had 30+ adds. The top add, Dead Weather topped out at 83 adds.  I was surprised how tight all the adds were and that Dead Weather did not get above 100 ADDS but with so many to pick from it meant we had so many in the 30's and it brought down that top #. I would not be shocked to see the same thing happen again this next week as well as the week after CMJ.

The real question on the charts is who will knock off Beach House!? The current group of records in the top 10 are so far behind that it would take at least another 2 weeks of huge gains and also huge drops from Beach House to get up there. So lets start looking at this weeks ADDS.

Who out of this group do you think will challenge for #1?   The record I think we should all look out for is Kurt Vile. I ask stations who they are excited about each week and the answer overwhelmingly was Kurt Vile this week. If we look at the charts he is already at #58.  Look out for this record.

Early on, as I mentioned, it seemed like we were going to have a huge increase in the number of stations reporting. It only ended up being 13 stations though. However if we include the stations that were INVALID it would of been an increase of 23 stations.   With new MD' starting up it's easy to not know what you are doing. So lets look at some common mistakes with the Invalid charts.

Look at just this stations top 10.

The rest of the chart is pretty much the same. Damien Rice, Cold War Kids, Alt-J over and over again.  On the CMJ charts we have seen an increase in the number of singles reported however CMJ is an ALBUM based chart. So that means if there is just a single out then its ok to chart that single however if the full record is out you need only to report that album.

This next station is the most common error we see and is very easy to fix

Reporting the same record twice. I have never used the CMJ system from a station perspective and from what I hear there are some exciting new changes coming but I don't understand why the system lets a station report 2 of the same record if its not allowed. Perhaps there is a warning given to the station, I don't know but there should be.

Here is another station with that same issue:

This next mistake is a little more rare and I am not even sure how it happens :

But you do see this happen from time to time.

So those are some examples of what not to do. I know whenever I see an Invalid chart I try and reach out to the station to let them know what is wrong and that they have time to fix it. I am sure others do the same.

Thank you for reading! Lets talk on twitter.

COLLEGE RADIO RECAP CMJ ISSUE 1411 WEEK 38

Just when you think everything is going one direction it comes to a crashing halt.  Last week we saw the largest uptick in stations in sometime. You would think late September would mean a continued increase in stations.  Well I did at least, this week we lost 14 stations. It does not seem like  a lot but I would love to be seeing gains of 20+ a week.   I am not sure it really had much of an impact though.

Beach House continues to dominate. The big move of week comes from Foals going from #9 to #2. But the remaining gap of 42 stations from #2 to #1 is roughly equal to the same gap of #2 to any of the records in the 6-12 range.  So I would guess Beach House will lose some stations next week and Foals will gain some but a 42 station swing might be difficult.  When talking about Foals we need to also talk about the #2 add that week Fidlar. They made a nice move as well from #11 to #5. But they are only a few stations outside of that 42 station gap I mentioned above.  So they should be able to move up to #3 next week but records such as Yo La Tengo,  Arcs, Panda Bear, Low, Beirut, and Battles all are going to be very fluid within that top 10.  But I don't see any having enough juice to make a jump past #3.

One of the interesting things that happens every year around this time is with stations coming back from summer break is they go after the older records and help prop them up for longer periods of time.  Tame Impala in its 10th week on the chart is still holding strong at #6.  Courtney Barnett in her 27th week on the chart is still in the top 100 at #90.  Best Coast even went up this week in their 21st week. That usually lasts for a few weeks before those older records are pushed out by the new stuff. It is a bummer to have one of those records that gets caught in-between though.

One great/ hard thing about fall means that ADDS are a lot more competitive.   This week I thought we would see a few records get 100 + adds but in the end only Youth Lagoon was able to break the 100 ADD barrier.  This is largely because there were more records getting 10 plus adds.  I thought it would be interesting to compare how adds would look in different weeks.

For example 6 weeks ago the #1 most added record was Chelsea Wolfe with 83 adds. 83 adds would of gotten her 2nd three times and 3rd twice. Of course each week is different with different numbers of records going but thats kind of the luck of the ADDS from week to week.  She just happened to go the right week.  But who is to say that if she went in the week with Foals she would get the same. You can't but its still fun to look.

I decided to also take a look at how many adds there were overall each week in the top 20.
For example this week there were 704 total adds in the top 20. Last week there were 785 and on average over the past 6 weeks there are 723 adds in the top 20. The high was 785 total adds and the low was 664 total adds. To look at those numbers more accurately you need to also know how many reporters there were in each week.  I am still trying to see if these numbers mean anything. Currently I cannot tell but it's interesting to note that percentage wise there seems to be about the same number of ADDS making up the top 20 week to week.

Lastly I have not done this for a while but lets look at how ADDS from 6 weeks ago faired on the charts compared each other.

All of the records were charting still this week except for Sweet Baboo, Monks of Mellonwah and Reatards.

Reatards peaked at #76 and charted for 3 weeks
Sweet Baboo peaked at #163 and charted for 2 weeks
and as far as i can tell Monks of Mellonwah never charted.

When you look at those #'s what do you see? I see that the #1 ADD had the highest peak and in this case was a clear indicator of how the record was going to do. The biggest overachiever is Potty Mouth as they preformed like a top 5 record. But for the most part the top 5 records performed one way and the top 10 were slightly below and so forth.  So in the battle of Do ADDS matter looks like for this week they did.

Lastly we are a few short weeks away from the CMJ MARATHON!
I will be on an awesome panel with some fine people a CMJ AMA.
ALSO PIRATE! will be having a great CMJ PARTY!!!!
What will you be singing?

Lets talk about everything on Twitter.

CMJ ISSUE 1410 Week 37 COLLEGE RADIO RECAP

Hey there! Welcome back. We have our biggest reporting week since week 16!

I thought we would see a pretty good battle, no pun intended, for adds this week but in the end Battles lead most of the way and had a pretty convincing win.

Yo La Tengo is a stretch as well but the last one took #1 with no indie and a slow build so who knows if they can do it again.  Destroyer  made a nice move last week but the gap between 3 and 1 is so significant that I have my doubts that they can make that jump before Foals does or even before Battles or Shannon and the Clams does.  We might be in for a 2-3 week run with Beach House.

The CMJ Marathon is coming up soon! I am sure you have checked out the initial lineup https://www.cmj.com/marathon/

We also have the nominations up for the CMJ Awards

Congrats to all those that were nominated.

The person I nominated in 5 of the categories got nominated so I feel pretty good about my picks!

COLLEGE RADIO RECAP WEEK 36 CMJ ISSUE 1409

One last reminder to get in your CMJ NOMINATIONS  in today by 3PM eastern!  ( read the posts below to see my thought process and why you should nominate ME!!!)

I hope everyone had a good Labor day weekend. I always look at this week as the start of Fall at College radio. Companies go from having one big push to having 3-4 big pushes. The volume of mail coming in to college stations combined with the digital records has to be incredible. So its about to be a lot of fun at college radio!

Lets start with the ADDS this week.

It was exciting to have a back and forth battle for that number one spot. Both Foals and Fidlar blowing past the ever important 100 ADD barrier, each with over 50% of the reporting stations.

So the question I have is do either of these records have a shot at #1 on the charts.  We have to look at a  few things.

What is out there now?  Well currently we have a pretty fun race for #1 going on.

11116MAC DEMARCOAnother OneCaptured Tracks
244123BEACH HOUSEDepression CherrySub Pop
32226LA LUZWeirdo ShrineHardly Art
Each of these records were very close to #1 this week. I would have to imagine that Beach House takes it next week though.

For other contenders on the chart right now you have to look at Destroyer at #6, had the same ADD week as Beach House so good potential of being blocked from the top spot.
Ben Folds at #9 is interesting but I would doubt it has the juice to get up there.  I find Yo La Tengo at #13 to have a chance only because they have done it before and last weeks #1 most added Panda Bear at #18.  In looking at all of those I think that Foals and Fidlar would have a better shot at #1.

In order to really know thought I also need to know how the past release from each band did and when.

So lets look at #2 most added Fidlar first.

The Fidlar record peaked at #8 in the Spring of 2013. The spring is a busy time so top 10 that time of year is pretty good. You would have to think that this record should improve upon that.

In looking up Fidlar it was not hard for me to find the last Foals record as it was pretty much around the same time of year.

10103-102FOALSHoly FireWarner Brothers

so lets look a few weeks after this to see how Foals ended up doing.

45647FOALSHoly FireWarner Brothers
The last Foals record peaked at #4 on the top 200.

So you would think the goal would be #1.

What do you think is more likely Foals beating its last record or Fidlar? Obviously Fidlar only needs to go above 8 where as Foals needs top 3.

Lastly we need to look at what is coming out over the next few weeks that could get in the way of these records.

CMJ keeps a decent list of what is going for adds. I am not sure if you can access it as a station but I have to imagine you can.  Check here  I also check coming soon sites such as Pause and Play  Of course there are always records I can't find and records that end up being bigger than I think they will be so its a fun puzzle to try and put together.

Looking at all the information though I think we can safely guess we might see these 2 battle it out for #1 right around the time Beach House is coming out of #1.

What do you guys think?

Who is going to CMJ? Saw there was some big Periscope announcement coming at 10AM ... so it has already happened.. I wonder what it was...

Ok lets talk on Twitter.

CMJ NOMINATIONS THE STATION AWARDS.

Welcome back friends! Yesterday I went through the reasons Douglas Blake from Pirate! should be your pick for Promoter of the year.  (You can see that in the post below)  Today I wanted to go through the Station awards and how I pick who I will nominate.

This year there are 8 Station awards.  I would say the average promoter talks to 100+ stations. Some more, some less. So to divide those 8 awards up between those stations is difficult. I am sure quite a few promoters come from really great stations and will nominate them for a lot of the awards but lucky for me my station is dead so it is not something i consider.

Over the past week I have asked stations to tell me what they want to be nominated for, with that answer not being EVERYTHING.  I try to get the MD think about what their station should be recognized for. I know most MD's don't like to pick themselves for MD of the year but if thats what you think you should be recognized for I say go for it.

I also try and look at previous years awards and not nominate the same stations over and over again.
Last year WTBU won station of the year and MD of the year so I would try and pick someone else.

Here is the full list of last years winners.

Radio Awards

Station Of The Year
WTBU (Boston, MA)
Music Director Of The Year
Ingrid Jin, WTBU
Specialty Music Director Of The Year
Andrew Weiler, CJLO
Most Creative Programming
KALX (Berkeley, CA)
Best Community Resource
KUOM (Minneapolis, MN)
Best Student-Run, Internet-Only Station
WVAU (Washington, DC)
Best Taste In Music
Trevor Morrison, WHUS
Best Use Of Limited Resources
Radio UTD (Richardson, TX)
Rookie Of The Year
Michelle Feghali, WDBM
Biggest Champion Of The Local Scene
KUOM (Minneapolis, MN)
Biggest Improvement
WVFS (Tallahassee, FL)
Will Never Sell Out
Ross Koeberl, KUOM
Not to say I won't nominate those stations for anything but I won't nominate them for what they won last year, but all of those stations above are still very good.

So lets look at each award. (keep in mind these are from MY pool of stations)

Most Creative Programming
Station with the most interesting and innovative programming

For me this is almost a runner up to the Station of the Year award.  Last years winner KALX is a great example.  Other good stations I would consider for this award are KUOM, WVFS, KZSC, KVRX.

Best Student-Run, Internet-Only Station
Student-run station doing great things without a terrestrial signal

Last Year WVAU won and they are not one of my stations. These stations tend to be on the smaller side but of course as it says above they do great things.  Out of my stations I really like Spinnaker radio in Florida,

Small Station, Big Idea
Station that accomplished the biggest and best things with limited resources
I guess this station would be the one that is like the one above but has an actual signal. WLUR is one of the more consistent stations I have and I would consider them. WRRG as well. KSYM, KRSC all come to mind also.

Biggest Improvement
Station that took the biggest strides in the past year
I always feel bad about this one. It's like you were pretty awful last year and well you are doing better this year. So I guess its a good thing that you are better but its mostly that we all disliked your former MD.  WLUW is one of the stations that has gotten better recently without changing MD's so thats one I will think about.  KTSW is doing good things. KSJS has also gotten its act together after what seems like a year off. WMUL has also done a good amount to improve.

Biggest Champion Of The Local Scene
Station that best supports their surrounding city and community, from local bands to record stores to listenership and beyond
Last years winner KUOM is a great example of this and I don't fault anyone that nominates them again.  I would pick a station that tries to do a lot of different things with local artists and with artists while they are in town.  WDWN, WVFS, WBWC, and WTSR are good candidates this year.

Specialty Music Director Of The Year
Best music director with a specialty/genre focus. Please include name and station.
As someone that just promotes to the top 200 I do not talk to a lot of specialty directors but if you have someone in mind I will post below with the other pushes from radio stations.

Music Director Of The Year
Best overall music director. Please include name and station.
Now we are on to the big guns. What makes a good music director? You might think I would say its someone that charts all of my records but it's not. It's someone that returns my calls and emails on a regular basis. That listens to the records I prioritize for that station and that has constructive feedback for me. Some of my favorite MD's barely play any of my records. But I respect them for the way they run the station.
Its so hard to pick one but my short list  right now are Geoff from KRSC, Chloe from WLUW, Madison from WTSR, Shay from KZSC, Dan from WHUS, Jamie from WITR, Quentin from KUMD, Sean From KVMR and David from WVFS  One of those will be my  nomination.

Station Of The Year
Best overall station
Now last year WTBU won Station of the year. They are not my station. But I was surprised. There was a lot of talk last year about how the awards are carried out both on the Industry and Station side and if the way the voting is done really leads to "the best" being rewarded. It really ends up being a numbers game at CMJ if you bring 30 people from your station, you get 30 votes and well you are more likely to win. I do not know if this was the case last year but this has been brought up to me many times as to how people win. With that said of the Music Directors listed above one of those stations will be my station of the year. And while you can see the 2 going hand in hand I try to have a different station in each category. That is just they way I choose to do it.

So that does it. This years preview of the Station nominations for the CMJ awards. If you want me to add anything just tweet at me.

So far I have received 2 emails promoting themselves, and If I get anymore I will post them here.
This is From WKNC
Biggest Champion Of The Local Scene -- We have 10 hours a week that are strictly NC music, featuring interviews and live performances of local bands. We also host Local Band Local Beer every Thursday.

Small Station, Big Idea- Unfortunately our university does not entirely acknowledge us, probably because they are focused on other matters. Because of this we are almost entirely self funded and have a bunch of events that help us raise money to do cool things. For example, we just had the Radio Ride and made over $1000 from that alone. We are kinda the angsty 3rd son trying to get our dad's (NC State) attention! Help us get noticed by our dad!!

Biggest Improvement-- WKNC has been growing a ton this year. We are getting more and more bands for our Lounge sessions and we are finalist for CBI's National Student Production Awards for the categories of audio newscast and social media.

Most Creative Programming -- If someone wants to play a certain genre they can. Currently we have specialty shows for the following genres: Emo, Punk, Disco, South Asian, A Capella, Spanish programming, K-pop and post rock. Pretty crazy

This is From WDWN

Biggest Champion Of The Local Scene
Station that best supports their surrounding city and community, from local bands to record stores to listenership and beyond

I forgot this earlier from WTSR

Have you voted for CMJ nominations yet? Do I still have time to convince you that WTSR should be nominated for Biggest Champion for the Local Scene? Station of the Year? Are you not totally sick of me being around after two years and want to nominate me for MD of the Year? I plan to use my newly minted argumentation and debate skills to make my case.  Are you campaigning for Promoter of the Year? Lemme hear why you should get my vote!

This just in from WVUA

Golly jee, we're at it again!
Last year we won CMJ's Best Student-Run, Internet-Only Station. This year we want to take home that and more!
American University's WVAU has had an exciting year after we were crowned last year at CMJ, but as always we are looking to move forward and think bigger. We hope to not only prove we can take the Student-Run Internet-Only title two years running, but want to flex our waveform muscles with some other awards as well.

The nominations we hope to receive are:
  • Best Student-Run, Internet Only Station
  • Station of the Year
  • Music Director of the Year (Michael Lovito)
Click here for the nomination form!

WE got KALX as well now

Woah totally forgot about the CMJ COLLEGE RADIO AWARDS! We would definitely appreciate a nomination for most creative programming! A  quick look at our charts definitely shows that we have incredibly unique programming, and with specialty shows dedicated to metal, difficult/avant-garde, world/international, jazz, RPM, roots, country, hip hop, and rap, we try and succeed at diversity. Here's our livestream to see what I mean.

AND WLUW

You could nominate WLUW for like "Best at not doing what they're told" or like "Best at saying no to authority" or something like that. Or maybe most improved if we're being serious? Like have you seen our youtube channel and how awesome our in-studios are now? You could also nominate me for "always sick" or "best meltdowns during tracking" or "most likely to get too drunk and run away during CMJ." Or best music director it's whatever.
